Complimentary Medicine

Description:

Although not a typical treatment option, we encourage our patients to consider whether complementary medicine is a viable alternative.  The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) defines complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as those medical care systems, practices, and products that aren’t “conventional.”

Medical professionals find that complementary medicine treatments are effective when paired with traditional healthcare. Among the leading complementary medicine options are:

  • Whole Medical Systems – With their origins outside traditional medical practices, homeopathic and naturopathic medicines stimulate the body's own healing abilities through the application and/or ingestion of small doses of highly diluted substances and through dietary and lifestyle changes.
  • Mind-Body Medicine – These therapeutic alternatives involve the mind’s ability to affect the body’s health and function and consist of patient support groups, meditation, prayer, mental healing, and creative therapies including art, music, and dance.
  • Biologically Based Practices – Practices such as aromatherapy include the use of natural substances, like supplements, herbs, and nutrients found in foods.
  • Manipulative and Body-Based Practices – Such alternatives include yoga and joint manipulation.
  • Energy Therapies – Such practices involve energy fields that surround and penetrate the body. For example, Qi Gong, a Chinese medicine involving healthy blood flow, blends movement, meditation, and controlled breathing. Similarly, Reiki therapy incorporates the transfer of universal energy for healing through hand placement.
  • Bioelectromagnetic-Based Therapies – This form of complementary medicine involves the use of electromagnetic fields and includes pulsed fields, magnetic fields, and alternating-current or direct-current fields.

Spine Surgery

Description:

At The Spine Center, we offer a variety of options for neck, back, and spinal conditions. This includes many painless, convenient, and effective services that can relieve and eliminate pain. Unfortunately, with certain conditions surgery may be the only viable option!

Patients of The Spine Center have direct access to a diverse group of musculoskeletal professionals. Our surgery team is led by Chetan K. Patel, M.D., a nationally renowned orthopedic surgeon and an expert in matters relative to the spine. We offer various minimally invasive and non-invasive surgical options for the treatment of all adult and juvenile conditions. Chetan K. Patel M.D. specialzes in the following surgeries:

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Foraminotomy - This surgery relieves pressure on the nerves of the opening of the spinal column.  The surgeon makes an incision at the back of the neck and moves the muscle, revealing the bone underneath. The surgeon then cuts a small hole into the vertebra to remove the problematic bone or disk material.

Microdiscectomy – Typically utilized for ruptured, bulging, or herniated disks, the surgeon makes one small incision and inserts a small tube for a microscope and surgery instruments.

Facet Thermal Ablation – The surgeon uses a laser to clean the facet joint and then deadens the responsible nerves, thereby eliminating any pain.

Percutaneous Discectomy – The surgeon removes the herniated and/or bulging disc material, thus relieving pressure on spinal nerve roots.

Kyphoplasty – Often performed for bone fractures, fractures caused by osteoporosis, the surgeon makes two small incisions, inserts a tube into the vertebrae, and injects cement into the area. This prodecure usually results in rapid pain relief.

Minimally Invasive Fusion – Surgeons use fusion with vertebral conditions such as fractures or scoliosis.  It only requires inch-long incisions to expose the vertebrae, anchoring the rods and screws to hold the spine in place during the healing process.

Laminectomy/Laminoplasty – These options typically accompany fusion procedures. With a laminectomy, the surgeon removes anything compressing the spinal cord such as bone spurs and ligaments. This relieves spinal cord pressure. Similarly, a laminoplasty involves opening, but not removing, obstacles. The surgeon expands the spinal canal and any nearby spinal levels.

Bone graft – The surgeon uses material to fill in space resulting from disk removal and along the vertebrae’s sides. Three types of material (i) bone marrow from the hip (autografts), (ii) setting calcium phosphate cements, and (iii) bone matrix gel.

Non Traumatic Surgery

Non-traumatic spine surgery procedures access and treat spinal pathology through a muscle splitting approach. This avoids stripping and traumatizing muscle tissues. Some of these procedures can be performed through an incision that is small enough to be closed with a band-aid instead of requiring stitches.

Traditional Surgery

We also offer all the traditional surgical options for your neck and upper or lower back pain treatment.

If you’re searching for neck or back pain management, the surgical team at The Spine Center is available to address your questions and concerns. Please call us at (407) 303-5452.

Injections

Description:

Injections, another treatment option, may provide immediate, long-lasting relief for musculoskeletal conditions. The Spine Center  recognizes the value of utilizing injections to treat neck and back pain. Our patients have the option to select a comprehensive treatment program for their individual problem areas. Patients often benefit from injections because injections are excellent tools for diagnosing musculoskeletal conditions and related symptoms and are effective treatment options for neck, back, and spinal pain/discomfort.

The most common injections are:

  • Epidural Injections – Medical professionals use these as diagnostic tools when pain begins in the spine and radiates down the arms or legs, with pinched nerves. Patients receive anesthetics, anti-inflammatory medications, and are carefully monitored. Epidural injections reduce inflammation and relieve or eliminate pain. However, additional treatments may be required.
  • Facet Joint Injections – Physicians utilize such injections for diagnostic and therapeutic reasons, particularly for patients with degenerative and/or arthritic conditions or injuries. Since facet joints enable spinal movement, these injections provide neck, middle back, or lower back pain relief and may also provide neck and back pain management for the shoulders, buttocks, or upper legs. Such injections may require anesthetics and steroids for additional neck or back pain relief.
  • Sacroiliac Joint (SI joint) Injections – Often used to diagnose and treat pain targeting the joints between the pelvis and the sacrum, these injections are given for pain in the lower back, buttocks and legs. They usually involve steroids and anesthetics. Medical professionals also use X-rays to ensure proper placement and safety.
  • Provocation Diskography – These injections reproduce the actual pain and discomfort. Typically these injections are used if previous treatments were ineffective, if existing pain has worsened, or when a physician is exploring non invasive surgery as an alternative.

A typical course of injections often involves a regular exercise program, including both stretching and strengthening movements. This is crucial for maintaining and improving patients’ spinal mobility and stability. The Spine Center works closely with all its patients to identify an effective program of injections or other treatments.  We invite you to call us at (407) 303-5452.

Manipulation Therapy

Description:

The Spine Center also provides an additional treatment option known as “manual” or “manipulative” therapy which involves physical interaction with specific body parts.

Basically, manipulation therapy provides neck and low back pain relief and may also decrease inflammation, while increasing range of motion, stability, and movement. There are various types of manipulation therapy which may effectively relieve and treat musculoskeletal conditions. Identifying the appropriate approach for a patient often depends on the specific injury or condition. Other treatment options that can impart neck, and upper and lower back pain management are associated with certain body regions, including those involving the manipulation and/or mobilization of joints bones, nerves, and muscles.

Other manipulation therapy treatments encourage stress relief and relaxation, such as massage, acupressure, and rolfing, soft tissue manipulation. The Spine Center offers different manipulation therapy treatments as it includes a qualified team of healthcare professionals, including physicians, physical therapists, and pain specialists.

If you are interested in exploring the manipulation therapy alternative, you will find a qualified practitioner at The Spine Center. For additional information, please call (407) 303-5452

Multidisciplinary Diagnostic Team

Description:

If you’re suffering from any type of neck or spinal condition, you need immediate improvement. Unfortunately, you’re typically handed off to “specialists” at locations far apart as your pain and discomfort worsens. But what if you could address your specific condition with a multidisciplinary diagnostic team?

At The Spine Center, our professionals are uniquely qualified to diagnose and treat every type of musculoskeletal condition. As a result, our patients do not need to travel to distant medical offices over a long period of time. This enables our team to effectively and quickly discuss each patient’s specific symptoms and treatment options with direct access to the necessary medications, tools, and equipment.

Several studies illustrate that a multidisciplinary diagnostic team helps to ensure relief and elimination of pain for musculoskeletal conditions. No matter what your condition, a multidisciplinary diagnostic team often effectively demonstrates positive measurable outcomes. By placing our patients at the center of the medical effort, our multidisciplinary diagnostic team can identify specific neck and back pain treatment goals.
